Picaflor Handmade Jewellery

We are delighted to welcome Picaflor to Newcastle Vegan Festival on Saturday 4th July.

We empower women from remote areas of Colombia by providing them with job opportunities and access to training and skill development by training them to produce handmade jewellery using sustainable materials and by helping them to understand and actively participate in biodiversity conservation.

Women for Conservation began in 2008 as an initiative of Fundación ProAves, it was born from our understanding that for conservation to work efficiently, the communities around nature reserves needed a sustainable source of income instead of destroying wild life and their habitats. We are committed to helping families from remote areas of Colombia to be good stewards of their environment, especially for globally significant biodiversity reserves threatened by illegal extraction of natural resources or forest cutting, while creating jobs and alleviating poverty for local families by providing the women with job opportunities and access to training and skill development, and by helping them to understand and actively participate in conservation.

We have seen the fantastic results of involving the women at the grassroots level in the conservation of threatened species of wildlife. Women are vital to the success of any conservation project: they have the power to educate their children and the entire family to be stewards of the earth. We want to bring to the world a different perspective on women and their major role in protecting the natural resources. They are a catalyst for change.
