Serrinha, Barroca, Teofilandia and Biritinga are four cities in Brazil that have taken steps to reduce their water consumption footprint, they have implemented several ideas, one of which is switching their schools meals from a standard diet to 100% vegan.
The project has been called the Sustainable School project (Escola Sustentável) which has been driven by the HSI ( Humane Society International ). By 2019 over 30,000 will be given 100% vegan meals, this will amount to over 23 million meals a year.
The projects launched only a few weeks ago, the first steps included culinary training their staff and making sure all ingredients are locally sourced.
Besides the obvious animal welfare concerns, animal agriculture uses up huge amounts of water, energy and land. Raising animals for food is one of the biggest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions.
Oakland schools partnered with the environmental group Friends of the Earth (FOE) to fight global warming by making student lunches climate-friendly.
“While our study focused on school food, it’s clear that meat and cheese reduction is a powerful climate mitigation strategy for all restaurants and institutions that want to reduce their environmental impact,” Kari Hamerschlag, FOE’s deputy director of food and technology, said in a press statement. “We hope this report inspires more public institutions to serve less and better meat and more plant-based foods as a cost effective way to achieve both environmental and public health goals.”
